Water Leakage Behind Tiles: How It Is Found

Water leaking behind tiles can be located without removing them. Here is how detection works through tiled surfaces.

Tiles conceal problems beautifully. Water can sit behind a tiled wall or floor for a long time, and the first sign is often damage in a completely different room.

Signs of water behind tiles

Tiles sounding hollow when tapped, grout that stays dark or damp, individual tiles lifting or cracking, mould reappearing along grout lines after cleaning, and damp on the far side of the wall.

Why the tiles do not need to come off

Thermal imaging reads the surface temperature of the tile, which reflects the moisture behind it. Moisture meters take readings through and around the tile surface. Neither requires removal.

Locating the source

Finding moisture is only the first step. The source could be a supply pipe behind the wall, a failed waterproof membrane, a leaking drain or water tracking from elsewhere. We isolate each by testing them independently — running only the shower, pressurising only the supply, filling only the waste.

What happens next

Once the source is confirmed, the repair opening is targeted. Instead of stripping a whole bathroom, a small defined area is opened at the identified point. That difference typically saves thousands in tiling and reinstatement.

Acting early matters

Water behind tiles degrades adhesive and substrate progressively. Caught early, the repair is contained. Left long enough, the entire installation fails and re-tiling becomes unavoidable.
